A little preparation can make your photo session feel calm, organized, and enjoyable from the start. When you know what to expect and take care of a few details ahead of time, you can focus on being present instead of feeling rushed.
Personally, I want every session to feel comfortable and natural. A relaxed session helps create images that feel authentic, and pre-planning your looks will take a lot of stress off of both of us on your portrait day!
Choosing clothing ahead of time is one of the easiest ways to reduce stress. Select outfits that coordinate well without looking overly matched, and make sure everyone feels comfortable in what they are wearing. Neutral tones, soft textures, and a few complementary colors often photograph beautifully.
The number one thing people forget is that iron! Please make sure clothes are as wrinkle free as possible - especially men's dress shirts and skirts with flowey fabric. Nothing kills a beautiful image faster then those wrinkles calling attention away from you.
Lay everything out the week before, including shoes, accessories, and any extras you may need. A little organization now can save time and keep your session day moving smoothly. For extra bonus points, put accessories together in one bag per outfit, which makes changing quick without forgetting anything important.
If you are bringing props- sports equipment, signs, etc- have them al ready to go in a tote-bag. It's hard to photograph a baseball player without his pants, or hat, or bat! Plan as if you were heading out to the field to play and pack accordingly.
Plan to arrive a few minutes early so you can settle in without feeling hurried. This is especially helpful for sessions in the studio, where we can hang up your items in the dressing room and go over background choices. Even a short buffer can make a big difference in how the session feels. Often we go a few minute over, so don't scheduled anything important directly after a session.
The goal is to have fun, not to be perfect. The best moments often happen when everyone feels relaxed and free to be themselves. If you know a particular outfit needs to be hemmed, make sure it is done prior to your session so that you aren't tripping on it and worried about it while you are being photographed. (Trying to pin and tape clothing together becomes the focus, and I want the focus to be on you!) This includes bra straps showing, black undergarments under white clothing, tan lines and hair with grown out roots. Everything shows so plan head to toe!
You do not need to know how to pose or worry about what to do in front of the camera. During your session, I will guide you through each step so you feel supported and confident. My approach is designed to bring out genuine connection while keeping the process simple and comfortable.
1. What to Wear (and what to avoid)
– Stick to a color palette that matches your skin tone and the season, ditch the overly matchy-matchy outfits
– Avoid busy patterns/logos
– Think movement (flowy dresses, layers, textures)
– Layers photograph best, and give versatility to your photos
2. Try Everything On Beforehand
This saves you from last-minute stress.
– Make sure outfits fit, zip, and feel comfortable. no underwear showing or other malfunctions.
– Sit, walk, move in them
– Steam/iron ahead of time
3. Hair + Makeup Prep
You want to look like you- don’t underdo or overdo it.
– Clean, dry hair if styling is included
– Neutral nails or fresh polish on both toes and fingers
– Moisturized skin and lips, no sun tan lines
– Avoid new skincare right before (breakouts happen)
4. Get Rest + Hydrate
This sounds simple but is often overlooked.
– Sleep matters (it shows in photos)
– Drink water the day before + day of
5. Eat Before Your Session
Low energy = flat photos
– Especially important for seniors + couples
– Avoid showing up hungry or shaky
6. Arrive On Time (or Early)
Late = rushed = stress = forced expressions
– Build in time for traffic, parking, outfit changes
7. Trust the Process
This is a big one.
– I’ll guide posing, expression, movement
– You don’t need to “know what to do”
– Relax, we will have a great time I promise. I got you!
8. Bring the Right Extras
Small things make a big difference
– Comfortable shoes for walking between spots
– Touch-up kit (lip gloss, powder, brush)
– Water
– Props that actually mean something (not random clutter)
9. For Couples: Focus on Each Other
– Talk, laugh, move, pretend you are on a date
– Don’t overthink the camera
– The best images come from interaction, not stiff posing
10. For Seniors: Make It Personal
– Bring items that reflect them (sports, hobbies, car, etc.)
– Multiple outfits = variety in your gallery
11. For Maternity Clients
– Schedule around when you feel your best (usually 28–34 weeks)
– Bring nude/strapless undergarments
– Avoid tight clothing right before (marks on skin)
12. Be Open to Creative Direction
– Lighting, locations, and posing might feel different than expected
– That’s where the magic happens
13. Weather Flexibility (for outdoor sessions)
– Trust me to watch the weather and we can reschedule if needed
– Some of the best images come from unexpected conditions
When you prepare ahead of time and arrive confident and with a relaxed mindset, it shows in the final images. That is when the session feels more enjoyable and we can concentrate on having fun and creating memories together.
